What to wear guide

What to wear guide

Simple guide to look your best for your session

I know a lot of people have a hard time coming up with outfits, it can be stressful sometimes, but it doesn’t have to be! You may be able to pull outfits together from your closet! Here are some tips and examples of what to wear for reference. Remember, the days of all white or black, all khaki or jeans are out. Your favorite look, bold colors, prints and layers are in!

Favorite places to shop

-Old Navy
-Target
-TJ Maxx
-Marshalls
-Joyfolie
-H&M Kids
-Forever21 (the cutest maxi dresses)
-Gap
-Walmart (believe it or not they have come a long way, esp with their kids clothes)
-Hand-me-downs (Goodwill, Antique stores. Garage Sales. Ebay. Zulily. Always keep your eyes open! You’ll be so surprised by what you can score!)
-AMAZON (They have the cutest dresses and kids outfits I will include a link below for mens, womens and childrens outfits!)
There are lot's of options out there that I love, these are just a few ideas to get the ball rolling.

Coordinate, don't copy

One way to keep the entire family looking unified is through coordinating colors. Pick three -four colors that look great on everyone, and work those colors into each outfit. Try one of these gorgeous color combinations:

1. Maroon-Grey-Khaki-Denim

2. Blue-White-Khaki-Yellow

3. Brown-Grey-Mustard

4. Maroon-Mustard-Navy-Denim

Start with one outfit that you really like, usually moms. From there, build onto it for everyone else.

Wear what you feel good in

If you aren’t comfortable in what you’ve chosen for pictures, it will show (this goes for kiddos too, there's nothing like an uncomfortable little one) If you can’t find a dress you feel good in, but you rock some skinny jeans, do it! If you can barely walk in heels, find some cute flats, boots or pretty sandals.

Wear what fits well. Keep in mind that for pictures, too large of a shirt, saggy jeans or a jacket that’s falling off the shoulders looks sloppy. Choose something that fits perfectly!

Moms- Maxi dresses are flattering on every body type.  They look amazing and are so versatile. Add a belt or a necklace with strappy sandals or flats for the summer, or a belted fitted cardigan in the fall.

Say no to fluorescents & too many patterns

Fluorescent or neon colors create color casts on faces, necks and hair. They are harsh.

stripes or a plaid is most effective when used in small doses. Avoid wavy designs and really tiny print.

I recommend versions of primary colors or neutrals. mustard, maroon,  rust, and navy blue.

Color Schemes for Family Photos

Below I've created some color schemes for you to get inspiration from when deciding what colors to wear for your next family photos. You may need to add more neutrals or use a few less colors depending on the size of your family, but these are a good starting point!
